    Automatic vs Manual CBT

Choose the right CBT bike before you book. For many beginners, the best option is the one that helps you stay calm, balanced, and focused on the road rather than on the controls.

    Short answer

CBT itself does not restrict you to the transmission type you trained on. If you are 17 or older and complete your CBT successfully, you can legally ride either an automatic scooter or a manual 125cc motorcycle within normal CBT restrictions.

The real question is not which option gives you a better certificate. It is which option gives you the best chance of learning safely and confidently on the day.

    Automatic vs manual CBT comparison

    Automatic CBT

Automatic scooters are usually easier for complete beginners because there is no clutch control and no gear changing to think about while you are learning balance, observation, braking, and road position.

    • Often the easier starting point for nervous or first-time riders
    • Lets you focus on road awareness rather than clutch bite and stalling
    • Popular with riders planning to use a scooter for commuting in London

    Manual CBT

Manual motorcycles make sense when you already know you want to ride geared bikes and you are prepared to learn clutch control, gear changes, hill starts, and slower-speed coordination from the start.

    • Useful for riders committed to geared motorcycles rather than scooters
    • Can feel more natural later if your long-term goal is a full manual motorcycle licence
    • Usually harder for absolute beginners because there is more to coordinate at once

How to decide which CBT to book

If you are a complete beginner, automatic is often the safer and more realistic recommendation. It lowers the workload early in the day and can make it easier to reach the required standard in the on-site and on-road elements.

Manual may still be the right choice if you already ride off-road, are confident with bicycle balance, or know you specifically want to own and use a geared 125cc motorcycle soon after CBT.

Riders aged 16 are limited to a 50cc moped, so manual motorcycle training is not the practical route at that age. Riders aged 17 or older can choose either manual or automatic training and can ride up to 125cc afterward if the CBT is completed successfully.

    Common beginner questions

    Is automatic easier?

Usually, yes. Automatic training removes clutch and gear changes, so many beginners find it easier to concentrate on balance, braking, observations, and following instructions.

Will automatic hold me back later?

No. The CBT certificate does not lock you to automatic only. If you later want a geared 125cc bike, you can still ride one once your CBT is complete and you meet the age rules.

When should I choose manual first?

Choose manual when your main goal is a geared motorcycle and you are comfortable taking on more controls during training, not because you think it gives you a stronger CBT certificate.

    What if I am unsure?

Compare the live booking options, then speak to the office if you want a recommendation based on age, experience, and the type of bike you expect to ride after the course.
